Practical Mic Technique for Narrators: Control Tone with Distance and Angle, Prevent Plosives and Sibilance

A Narrator’s Sound Is Shaped Not Only by the Voice, but by Position
In professional narration, the people praised for having a “great voice” are often the ones who carefully manage their relationship to the microphone.
Even with the same script, same voice, and same mic, moving your mouth just 3 cm can noticeably change low-end weight, breath content, and articulation. Shifting the angle by 10 to 30 degrees can dramatically reduce plosives and harsh sibilance.
What matters on set is not assuming you will fix everything later, but reducing problems at the source.
EQ and de-essers are useful, but a waveform distorted by a plosive or consonants made painfully sharp by sibilance can never be restored perfectly. That is why a narrator must design not only how to read, but also where to stand.
What Distance Changes: Proximity Effect and Air Balance
Most cardioid condenser microphones used in narration exhibit proximity effect.
As the sound source gets closer, the low frequencies are boosted, making the voice sound fuller and denser.
A practical guide:
- 5–8 cm: very close; dense and intimate, but more plosives, breath, and lip noise
- 10–15 cm: a highly usable working range; strong balance of body and clarity
- 20–30 cm: more natural and open, but more room tone and ambient noise
My own reliable starting point is roughly 12–15 cm from mouth to capsule, including the pop filter.
This distance avoids excessive plosive capture while keeping the voice from sounding thin. It works well for corporate videos, e-learning, and web commercials.
That said, if I want more gravity and intimacy, I move to 8–10 cm. If I want a cleaner, more explanatory tone, I widen to 15–20 cm.
In other words, distance is not a fixed answer; it is a fader that turns intention into tone.
What Angle Changes: Going Off-Axis Makes the Sound More Stable
Beginners often speak directly into the front of the mic.
In practice, however, it is usually more stable to work 10–30 degrees off-axis rather than at 0 degrees, straight on.
The reason is simple: plosive airflow tends to travel straight forward.
Sounds like P and B produce a burst of air. If that air hits the diaphragm directly, it creates a low-frequency overload—the familiar “thump” of a plosive.
So instead of placing the mic directly in front of the mouth, move it slightly to the left or right and speak across it. The voice still enters clearly, but the airflow no longer strikes the diaphragm head-on.
Two practical setups:
- Horizontal offset: place the mic 5–10 cm to one side of the mouth center
- Vertical offset: place the mic about 5 cm above mouth level, angled slightly downward
This combination is extremely effective.
Compared with speaking straight in, it reduces plosives, wet breath, and excessive sibilance without sacrificing much tone.
Sibilance Can Be Reduced by Mic Targeting, Not Just by Diction
When S sounds are harsh, people often blame pronunciation alone. That is only half true.
Sibilance becomes annoying when high-frequency energy created by the tongue and teeth is overly emphasized, and if that energy is aimed directly at the mic, the 5 kHz to 10 kHz range can jump out too much.
So sibilance control is not only about changing articulation, but also about keeping that high-frequency beam off the center axis.
A useful method is to aim the mic toward the corner of the mouth rather than straight at the center. Instead of firing the voice directly into the diaphragm, target the right or left mouth corner. In many cases, this alone softens sibilance naturally.
A pop filter also does more than block breath. It can slightly diffuse high-frequency energy.
Whether you use a metal filter like the Stedman Proscreen XL or a common dual-layer nylon filter, the more important factor is distance, not just filter type. It is often more stable to place the filter 5–8 cm from the mic, then keep your mouth another 7–10 cm away from the filter.
My Reliable Default Position on Real Sessions
For studio sessions or home recording, here is a setup that is hard to get wrong:
1. Cardioid microphone, 12–15 cm from the mouth
2. Pop filter 5–8 cm in front of the mic
3. Mouth positioned 15–20 degrees off-axis
4. Mic placed slightly above mouth level
5. Aim toward the mouth corner, not the center of the lips
The strength of this setup is its balance of low-end body, clarity, and noise prevention.
This matters especially in long-form narration, where speakers tend to lean forward over time, shortening the distance and suddenly increasing bass and plosives. To maintain consistency, use physical reference points: tape marks on the floor, a fixed music stand position, or even headphone cable tension as a guide.
Solve 80% Physically Before Reaching for Processing
Of course, de-essers and high-pass filters are useful.
For example, a gentle high-pass around 70–100 Hz helps clean up unwanted low-end rumble from plosives. A de-esser centered around 6 kHz can reduce listening fatigue.
But these should be final refinements.
The core solution is still the physical set of four: distance, angle, height, and target point. Once these are right, editing becomes dramatically easier. If they are vague, even expensive microphones and plugins still leave that feeling of “somehow harsh” or “somehow unstable.”
For a narrator, mic technique is not merely recording technique. It is part of performance technique.
Use physics to support emotion.
That mindset alone will raise your success rate in recording. On your next session, before you read the first line, ask yourself one question: Where exactly am I speaking into the microphone?
That is where the sound begins to change.
