Common examples include: “We expected WAV, but received MP3,” “It was supposed to be mono, but arrived in stereo,” or “The files were split differently from what the editor needed.”
In video production, voice files rarely stand alone. They must fit into later processes such as:

- Mixing with music and sound effects

- MA, cleanup, and loudness adjustment
- Exporting review files for clients

What is a recording format?
A recording format refers to the technical settings used when capturing the voice. This usually includes:

- Sample rate: 44.1kHz, 48kHz, etc.
- Bit depth: 16-bit, 24-bit, etc.
- Channels: mono or stereo
- Compression: uncompressed or compressed
These settings matter because they cannot be fully restored later. For example, a compressed file cannot truly be turned back into an uncompressed master, and low-resolution audio cannot simply be upgraded into high-quality source material. That is why recording format should be decided at the start.
What is a delivery format?
A delivery format refers to how the final files are handed over. This includes not only sound quality, but also how easy the files are to use in production.

Here are the most common formats used in video production.
WAV
WAV is the standard choice in many professional workflows. It is uncompressed, easy to handle, and works well with editing and mixing systems.

- Suitable as production master material
If you are unsure, WAV is usually the safest default. In many video projects, 48kHz / 24-bit / mono is a practical starting point.
MP3
MP3 is a compressed format, useful when small file size and easy sharing matter most.

- Includes compression-related quality loss
- Sometimes unsuitable as a master for editing or final mix
To avoid confusion, decide in advance whether MP3 is only for preview/review or acceptable as the final delivery format.
AIFF

Sample rate and bit depth
For video projects, 48kHz is commonly used. While 44.1kHz is still common in music, 48kHz is usually the more natural choice when the audio will be embedded in video. As for bit depth, 16-bit may work, but 24-bit often provides better flexibility for editing.
Mono or stereo
For narration, mono is usually sufficient. Stereo files can increase file size and may be unnecessary for simple voice tracks. If stereo is not needed, clearly specify mono.
File splitting
This can greatly affect editing efficiency.

- Split by scene
- Split by line
- Separate files only for replacement sections
If the voice needs to match captions or cuts precisely, smaller segments may be more useful. On the other hand, some projects also need a full read for flow and review. In many cases, requesting both a full file and split files is the most practical solution.
