In technical videos, narration should create a path to understanding—not just sound polished
When you work on highly specialized productions such as factory profile videos, medical device explainers, or B2B SaaS product demos, the role of narration changes dramatically. Unlike consumer-facing commercials, where memorability is often the goal, the top priority here is making sure the viewer is not left behind.
What matters first is not simply whether the narrator has a good voice. It is whether the density of information across visuals, captions, script, and voice is aligned. In technical content, adding more information does not automatically improve clarity. In fact, the more terminology a video contains, the more carefully you must separate what the visuals should show, what on-screen text should support, and what the narration should bridge.
In these projects, I design narration not as “explanation,” but as a pathway to understanding. In other words, the voice should not read everything. It should help the viewer naturally connect the dots: what is being discussed now, and why it matters.
Identify where viewers will stumble—because the stumbling points differ by industry
Technical videos are difficult not simply because they contain difficult words. They are difficult because the points where viewers cognitively stumble differ from one industry to another.
In factory videos, the issue is often not the name of the equipment or process itself, but the relationship between the previous and next stages. In medical device videos, the challenge is often not the feature description alone, but whether the viewer understands who uses it, in what situation, and for what purpose. In SaaS demos, listing features is less important than maintaining the sequence of problem before implementation, operation, and result. Once that sequence breaks, comprehension quickly collapses.
If you ignore these differences and read everything with the same energy, speed, and level of detail, the narration may sound neat, but understanding will not advance. At the script stage, directors and producers should identify likely misunderstanding points in advance.
A practical method is to ask during script review: “Will a first-time listener understand the subject and purpose of this sentence?” and “Before defining the term, can the listener imagine the usage context?” Doing this drastically reduces revisions after recording.
Don’t remove technical terms—relocate them
A common request is: “There are too many technical terms, so we want the narration to sound easier.” But in B2B and medical fields, oversimplifying terminology can actually reduce credibility.
A more effective approach is not to remove technical terms, but to change where they appear. For example, read the official term accurately once at the beginning, then switch to a shorter paraphrase. Or leave the technical terminology in the UI or diagrams on screen, while the narration guides the viewer using role-based phrases such as “this function” or “this process.” That alone significantly lowers the listening burden.
Another key point is to avoid reading long compound nouns exactly as written. A phrase like “high-precision image-analysis-algorithm-equipped inspection support system” may be manageable in text, but it is hard to process by ear. If you rewrite it in meaningful chunks—“an inspection support system equipped with a high-precision image analysis algorithm”—comprehension improves immediately.
Audio is not a substitute for text. Because listeners cannot rely on the visual support of written characters, word order and pauses become everything.
Don’t match the duration—match the viewer’s breathing for comprehension
One of the most common problems in explainer videos is narration becoming too fast in order to fit the edit. This happens especially in SaaS screen captures and factory process videos, where there are many shots the team wants to include.
But the speed at which a narrator can read and the speed at which a viewer can understand are not the same. A script may be readable and still fail to communicate. Production teams should redesign timing based not only on seconds, but on the viewer’s breathing rhythm of comprehension.
In practice, check each sentence and ask whether the visual information peak and the audio information peak happen at the same time. Explaining details exactly when a UI action occurs, or introducing a new concept while a complex cross-sectional diagram is on screen—these overlaps often hinder understanding.
Before recording, I recommend marking the script with explicit “pause points” and “light-read points.” Instead of reading everything at a uniform pace, even a 0.2 to 0.4 second pause before a key term can dramatically improve clarity in technical videos.
When choosing between AI and human voice, think not about accuracy, but about responsibility
As of 2024, AI voice quality has improved considerably. With a properly prepared pronunciation dictionary for technical terms, it is already practical for internal training materials and multilingual base versions. So where does the role of the human narrator remain? I believe the answer lies in responsibility.
In videos related to medical practice, manufacturing, or safety training, it is not enough to pronounce the words correctly. What matters is what gets emphasized, what is restrained, and what must be heard as a caution. This is not only a performance issue; it is also an issue of information responsibility. In other words, tone design itself affects how the content is interpreted.
AI is well suited to projects with frequent updates, fixed structure, and minimal emotional variation. Humans are better suited to projects that require misunderstanding prevention, trust building, safety emphasis, and brand personality. A hybrid workflow is often ideal—for example, using AI for draft verification or offline editing, then bringing in a human narrator for the final version.
A practical checklist for designing narration in technical productions
Finally, here is a concise checklist for producers and directors.
1. What is the first thing the viewer must understand in this video?
2. Have technical terms been divided into “terms to keep” and “terms to paraphrase”?
3. Is each sentence short enough to follow by ear?
4. Are the peaks of visual comprehension and audio comprehension separated appropriately?
5. Are speed, pauses, and vocal pressure designed for caution points?
6. Have you used an AI scratch read to identify mispronunciations and unnatural accents?
7. Have you shared a glossary, reference videos, and target audience information with the narrator?
The more specialized the video, the less narration should be treated as audio added at the end. It is a core part of comprehension design. The goal is not to make difficult content merely “simpler,” but to transform it into a form that reaches the audience accurately. With that perspective alone, the persuasive power of the entire video rises significantly.
